Situated in the heart of this spectacular valley, this famous beat has been well documented and illustrated in various publications over the years. Books such as “Fishing Dreams by T.T. Phelps” not only made reference to the world-class status of the Laerdal River but also specifically to famous beats and pools that consistently produced big salmon (Storlaks). Pools such as Mid Lysne, Streng and Axel were among these top pools – the latter named after Prince Axel of Denmark who fished the beat for many decades. A certain “Mr Raymond Brooks” also fished this beat every year through the 60- 70 and early 80’s and of course did particularly well with his favourite fly – The Sunray Shadow- a fly he designed specifically for the Laerdal’s fast clear water.
The Midt-Lysne beat extends for 900 meters and has 7 named pools. Fishing is available from both banks (via bridge crossing) along the its entire length offering both privacy and flexibility to a maximum of 4 rods. Accommodation is provided in the form of a self-catering lodge right next to the river. It consists of 5 twin sleeping rooms, bathroom/toilet/shower, living/dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. (BBQ also available). Cable TV with international channels and WiFi is provided. The lodge also has a large external terrace offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the river itself. There is a grocery store 2 km from the lodge. Alternatively, Laerdal town is 11kms downstream where the river meets the fjord.
This charming, intimate beat is a salmon fishermen’s heaven – Great pools, big fish, fantastic lodge and stunning scenery. No driving necessary – Just park-up and Fish!
